Müller Chair - Contest project

The German choreographer Pina Bausch produced a powerful and evocative dance-theater piece called Café Müller that premiered in 1978.

The Müller Chair draws inspiration from Pina Bausch’s evocative dance-theater piece Café Müller, blending emotional narrative with minimalist craftsmanship. Its design embodies the tension between vulnerability and resilience, mirroring the human experience explored in the performance.

The chair features a dynamic silhouette, where the seat and backrest subtly flow into each other, creating a sense of motion frozen in time. The gently curved seat invites interaction while maintaining an intentional tension between comfort and instability, challenging traditional seating expectations. The rear legs extend upwards to form a continuous line with the backrest, giving the chair a sculptural and architectural presence that reflects both fragility and strength.

The carefully placed joints and transitions from sharp to soft edges echo the fluidity of the choreography in Café Müller. The chair’s open and minimalist framework invites the user to engage with it physically and emotionally, encouraging exploration of stacking, nesting, and rearranging to create diverse compositions, just as the dancers manipulate chairs in the performance.

Crafted with a focus on materiality and detail, the Müller Chair is a tribute to both design and storytelling, serving as an object that invites reflection and interaction.
